Competition Philosophy

The Windy City Philosophy on Competition

After reaching a certain level of skill in fencing, for many people, it’s a natural progression to start competing in local and regional competitions. Fencers of all ages find opportunities to compete at the local, regional, national and even international level through the USA Fencing program. Fencing is one of only four sports to have been included in every Summer Olympics since 1896. Fencing is also an NCAA collegiate sport and Windy City alumni have opportunities to fence while attending some of the top universities in the country.

Competitive fencing is fun but doing it well requires commitment and many hours of focused practice. While many of the fencers who take a beginning fencing class do not choose to compete, and no fencer is pressured to do so, we support those fencers fencers who do by offering an optional team practice structure. We also make event coaching available at a number of tournaments throughout the year.

Fencing competitions are divided into gender and age groups, from 10-and-under through veterans, although at the local level, boys and girls often fence each other. There are beginning fencers in all age divisions. Windy City fencers have been very successful at local, regional, and national competitions, and fencers who do wish to compete will have many opportunities.

If you or your child is interested in competing, please talk with the coach.
